Becoming Happy, Healthy, and Holy

Marriage Vows March 24, 2008

During each wedding I attend, I feel myself getting philosophical. What do marriage vows really mean anymore?

These days, it seems “for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer” comes with fingers crossed behind the back. It seems to come with and unspoken disclaimer whispering, “Unless it doesn’t work out, then I’ll get divorced”. What’s up with that?

Has our society lost the value of vows? I am not judging those who have gone through divorce, even multiple. I just think that when times get extremely tough, seperation may be the key along with daily prayers for the Lord to change your heart or that of your spouse. We cannot change ourselves or our spouses long term, but God can.

If you feel like giving up on marriage, or even just yourself, remember this:

Psalm 9:10 “Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-5 “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”

Ecclesiastes 7:8 “The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.”

Prayer for the day:

“Dear Lord:
Thank you for all you have given me in my life. I will honor my promise before you, but please hear my prayer. Please change my heart and that of my husband. Make us pleasing to you. We cannot do this on our own, but beseech your help, Lord. Please give us patience with each other, love for one another, and rid us of all selfishness. Let us be a team and live according to your ways. Let us remember to honor one another as well as our wedding vows that we took in your presence.”

I also pray that you ladies will remember that if we seek God’s ways, He WILL answer our prayers. However, you may have to learn to forgive in order to obtain the happy marriage you seek.
